• Soil- dead matter, contains nutrients, supports root systems, holds water

• Typical/ ideal soil: 25% air (void) 45-48% mineral particles (solid) 2-5%- organic matter (solid) 25%- water (space)

• Beware compaction- restricts air and water flow

• Contamination can exist in a variety of ways, and therefore can be identified and treated in a variety of ways as well

• CBR (California Bearing Ratio)- The ability of the surface to support a load; minimum 5% capable of upholding most pavements without support

• Soil tests mostly done in lab; most plant nutrients are available at 6.5ph
